Image of the supergiant star Betelgeuse obtained with the NACO adaptive optics instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope. The use of NACO combined with a so-called “lucky imaging” technique, allowed the astronomers to obtain the sharpest ever image of Betelgeuse, even with Earth’s turbulent, image-distorting atmosphere in the way. The resolution is as fine as 37 milliarcseconds, which is roughly the size of a tennis ball on the International Space […]

Sarah Shooh & The Disarmers, Secret Emchy SocietyBottom Of The Hill, San Francisco, Wednesday, March 30, 2022 By Scott Tolar I had the pleasure of going to the Bottom Of The Hill on Wednesday March 30th to hear Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. I’ve been a fan of theirs since the Sidelong record came out in 2017, and really enjoyed the Years record that came out the following year. Not yet truly connecting to the newest release, Nightroamer, […]
By Brendan Miller Brendan Miller, aka DJ BK King of Pressia is a weekly new music show, so my show construction is reliant on whatever music the Divine Sonic Spirits have bestowed each week. However, I assure you: There is a method in madness! After King of Pressia airs Wednesday night, I take Thursday to enjoy listening to whatever I want (usually Phish, My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, The Rapture, Bowie […]
Seablite, Annika @ Rickshaw Stop, May 17 by Gage Kenady Seablite, San Francisco's own fuzz-pop jangle-gaze quartet, opened the show amidst dayglo projections that seemed to pulsate in sync with the propulsive beats and reverb-drenched vocals. Murky, mysterious and urgent, the mod a-go-go psych psounds of Seablite check all the right boxes for today's indie sophisticate, resulting in a swirly pleasuredrone. The music reminded me kind of like how, when we were […]
by Luke Poynter Luke Poynter I grew up, like most Americans, listening to the radio. As a preacher’s kid, secular (non-religious) music wasn’t allowed in our house for most of my childhood, so K-LOVE was played almost exclusively. I loved music, but I got tired of listening to the same things over and over again. In middle school, I dreamed of being a radio DJ until my teachers shot it […]

by Luke Poynter This past weekend, I attended “The Bay is Doomed” hosted by The New Farm in Hunter’s Point. The New Farm is a nonprofit venue run by Green City Project, and they offer their stage for open community use. I was invited to the show to watch MPTIS (pronounced “empty eyes”) perform a 15-minute set along with 16 other local bands. The show was all ages and, quite frankly, the […]
