Giants vs Rangers – Pregame Preview (5/10/21)

Sam Pasco

We’re 35 games into the 2021 MLB season and our San Francisco Giants sit atop the NL West with a 20-14 record. Entering tonight, that record is good for the second-best record in the National League and the fourth-best in the Majors.

Tonight the Giants wrap up their five-game homestand with a short two-game set against the Texas Rangers. San Francisco comes into tonight after winning their seventh series of the year yesterday, taking two of three against the Padres.

WOOD WOULD WORK

The Giants send LHP Alex Wood to the mound tonight against RHP Kyle Gibson. It’s the fifth start of the year for Wood, who is 3-0 on the season with a 1.96 ERA. Wood likes to work quickly. Wood is averaging 14.6 pitches per inning this season (ranking 9th in the Majors) and averages just 19.9 seconds between pitches this season (third quickest pace in the Majors this year). Here’s what Manager Gabe Kapler had to say about the pitcher’s pace:

PLAYER TO WATCH

C, Buster Posey

Posey has hit safely in each of his last eight games, batting .607 in 28 at-bats with four homers. His .400 batting average is the best figure in the Bigs. He went 1-2 with a walk yesterday against the Padres, extending his hit streak to eight games.

TEXAS HOLD’EM

Since 2000, the Giants hold a 17-7 record against the Rangers in the regular season, marking the third-best record in an Interleague match-up among NL Teams. Dating back to last season, San Francisco has won nine of 13 Interleague games while outscoring the opposition 83-51.
